Artist Statement

Nature has always been the inspiration for my artwork. I am drawn to its incredible power, raw beauty and ephemeral quality which continue to provide endless subject matter. Although most of my artistic life has been spent painting and drawing, a few years ago I began working with stained glass.  Now, rather than mixing the perfect color on a paint pallet, I search for each piece of perfectly colored glass which I then cut or break to fit with other pieces, sometimes adding a found natural object. Glass pieces are adhered to plywood and then grout is applied to the spaces between the glass.  I refer to my process as “painting with glass”. 

This show is a collection of work that expresses my love of landscape, organic forms, color relationships and natural light.  I spend much of my time outside connected to the natural world and am pulled toward creating images that reflect what I see and experience such as a beautiful sunset, the simple shape of a hill against the sky, golden light after a storm, the magical glow of twilight on a summer evening, or autumn leaves gracefully dancing toward earth. The final piece may end up being a fairly realistic portrayal of a particular scene or it may become a more abstract expression of shapes and colors. 

These pieces are inspired by natural places I have experienced near and far including my home on the outskirts of Frankfort where I am surrounded by forest and meadowland.
